Thank you for continuing Nancy Chamber's virtual journal concerning life in America's last frontier. Remember, you can email Nancy with your comments, if you wish, in care of station KNLS. September 1 It is moose hunting season. Each year we hope to get a moose, it is our red meat for the year. Last year Josh shot his first. Kevin and the boys usually hunt in the woods near here. They've learned to "call" moose, where they make the right sounds and scrape the trees with antlers so that a bull moose thinks another is nearby. When it comes to investigate, hopefully it will come close enough to shoot. (Photo notes: Josh Chambers with his moose calling equipment. Kevin and a downed moose.) September 5 It is finally time to go hunting for ducks and geese. It is our boys' favorite trip of the entire year. We drove down a mud trail for 30 miles to a cabin near the mud flats, bringing our dog along to retrieve the birds. Early in the morning Kevin and the boys hiked out to the ponds where they put out decoys and sit and wait. By noon they were back in the cabin with a few birds and an appetite. (Photo note: Jason Chambers with the family's retriever and a bird in hand.) September 30 We spent the day getting firewood. It's one of those chores we put off until it started to snow. We use firewood to heat our house, and we also have a wood stove for cooking. After Kevin cut down the tree with the chainsaw, it was cut into sections. Then I propped them up, Kevin split them with a maul, and Josh and Jason stacked the pieces in the truck. It took all day, and we need to do it 4-6 time a year for a whole year's supply. October 15 Today we had our first snow. It was warm enough that it didn't stick, but it will soon. Two days ago I saw the first Northern lights of the year. This is what we call aurora borealis. (Photo note: The Chamber's log home under a new blanket of snow. The front door is at the right. Earlier views pictured the cabin from the back.) November 26 Today is Thanksgiving, a traditional American holiday that honors the Pilgrims' first harvest, and the help that Native Americans gave them. We celebrated with a big dinner that has many of the same items they ate: turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry relish, pumpkin pie. We invited some good friends to come join us, and Kevin asked each person to talk about what they were thankful for. Then we gave thanks to God for all of our blessings. December 24 It is Christmas Eve, the night before Christmas. Although we don't know the date of Jesus' birth, it is traditionally celebrated December 25 in the States. Tomorrow we will have a nice dinner, and give friends and family gifts. We have a spruce tree in the living room decorated with lights and ornaments, the gifts sitting wrapped under it. Even though they are teenagers, Josh and Jason still hang up their stockings, hoping to find nuts, fruits, candy and small toys filling them in the morning. They are in bed and Kevin and I have a quiet moment to listen to Christmas music and watch the snow fall. We can think back on the last year and thank the Lord for His Son and how He has blessed us. We're looking forward to another New Year's celebration and the new year to come. (Photo notes: The family Christmas tree. A young Jason comes down the stairs of the Chambers log cabin on Christmas morning to check out the stockings!) It is our prayer that you have enjoyed your virtual visit with the Chamber's family?
