Author's Journal Transcripts for Andy Baker

Andy Baker is a veteran evangelist and the current Vice President for Development at World Christian Broadcasting, the ministry that owns and operates station KNLS.  Andy is currently leading the effort to raise funding for a second transmitter and antenna at the Anchor Point site.  Andy is heard each week on the New Life Station talking ABOUT prayer and leading our listening friends IN prayer.  Below you will find Andy's latest prayer, along with a catalogue of his earlier thoughts on the nature and purpose of prayer.

THIS IS MY FATHER'S WORLD

I want to tell you about a man with whom I have just recently become acquainted. He was born in 1858 and died in 1901. He was a terrific athlete, singer and musician. He was good with tools and liked to swim and was also an avid fisherman. He was a hiker and a jogger. He would leave his house in the morning to go run for exercise and would tell his wife, "I’m going out to see my Father’s world". He wrote a song with that title "This is my Father’s world", that could be sung anywhere in the world by anybody in every language. If you would like to have a copy of that song, I would be happy to make sure that you get a copy. I want to read the third verse before we pray together today. It says,

This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget

That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world: why should my heart be sad?

The Lord is King; let the heavens ring!

God reigns; let the earth be glad!

There are many things going on in the world that clouds our eyes and makes us wonder if God really is in control of the world, that makes us wonder if he is King and is ruling and reigning. He is. Let’s pray about the things that make it look like He is not.

INTEGRITY, A KEY TO YOUR PRAYER LIFE

I am so glad we have a few minutes today to pray together. There is one quality that makes a difference in life and can make a difference in our prayers. That quality? Integrity! If you have it, it will influence everything about you. You have it when you follow a certain set of values. It implies honesty. It was the prophet Micah who wrote about what is expected of us. He said: "do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). Integrity is a quality that every leader needs and every person respects. It is a matter of truth, faith and courage. With integrity, lets pray for a while about our lives at this serious time.

TRUE FREEDOM

Within the heart of every person, in the list of things that we wish for our children and grand children is the desire to be free. Debates are held, wars are fought and votes are taken by people all over the world who are trying to achieve peace and freedom. They may have different definitions for it but they desire a certain life for themselves, their children and for future generations. How do you find this freedom? Is it possible to have true freedom?

It might surprise you to know that genuine freedom and peace is only possible when we find God. There are many things around us about which we have no control. There are forces and influences that have impact on our outward conditions of peace and freedom. Finding God will result in true peace and freedom within, because of some things and in spite of some things. Freedom is our birthright, but we find it only when we turn our lives over to our Creator. Let’s pray for a few minutes about it.

AFRAID OF THE DARKNESS

Do you get afraid at night when it becomes dark outside? Do your small children become frightened at night when they must go to bed and all is very dark? I remember many nights when my daughter would come to my side of the bed carrying two or three dolls or teddy bears that she would sleep with and want a human with skin on them to come and give her relief from the scary darkness.

Darkness can also be felt during times of illness or times of discouragement. When a marriage is in trouble or when parents have trouble with their children, it can feel pretty dark. When our parents get older and not as healthy, it can seem like a dark shadow is always hanging over us. When there are threats where we live, it can be very chilling.

I wish you and I could set down together and talk for a while today. I would love to pray with you in person about the darkness that may be hovering around you. I too have dark days that I need to bring to God in prayer. What better thing could we do than pause and pray about the things that seem dark around us. Thanks for tuning in today so we could pray together right now.

MERCY

Edwin Chapin wrote, "Mercy among the virtues is like the moon among the stars, – not so sparkling and vivid as many, but dispensing a calm radiance that hallows the whole. It is the bow that rests upon the bosom of the cloud when the storm is past. It is the light that hovers above the judgement seat". Mercy is one of those things we need much more of in this world. We need more compassion, forbearance and forgiveness to be shown in life toward one another. Not much mercy is shown around us. It is easy to grow cynical and negative about life and about people that are different.

One of the ways that we can grow in mercy is when we realize the mercy that God shows us each and every day. Once we have experienced his mercy, it becomes so much easier to dispense mercy to others. May God help you and me to realize His mercy and then show it to others with whom we come in contact.

WE BOW AT THE MENTION OF HIS NAME

There are some names that when they are mentioned, you take notice. There are some people who are so widely known that when their name is spoken, you know who they are. President George W. Bush, Saddam Hussain, the Pope and Tony Blair might be some of those names you and I would know. There is a name that causes demons to tremble and flee. There is authority in one name that causes the devil to run away and hide in defeat. There is a name to whom the entire creation holds its very existence. It is a name that is above every name. When the name is mentioned, every knee should bow in humility. That name is the name of Jesus.

Wherever you are at this moment, whatever your circumstances, I want you to know that to pray in this name means that we can with full assurance know that everything His name represents will bring God’s answers to our needs. Through the name of Jesus when we pray, the all powerful and all wise God of the universe listens to our requests. Let us with confidence join together in prayer today.

PATIENCE - I WANT IT NOW

I wish I knew exactly where you were and what is going on with you in your life. I wish we could sit together and pray together for a while. You may be in a situation where having patience is really tough for you right now. I know I have prayed for some things very seriously and earnestly and no answers seem to come. Patience is the ability to bear up under the load. It is the ability to hang on, hold out and hold fast to hope and to the people around you. Patience is waiting for the Lord, knowing that He knows best and that He can be trusted. It might seem like God is not around when he delays answering our requests and prayers but He can be trusted every day. At times, the waiting may seem bitter. But we need to remember and never think that God’s seeming delays are His denials. He cannot and He will not fail us.

Listen to God’s words: "For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry" (Hebrews 10:36,37). I wish we could pray together in person. Maybe we can do that someday.

YOURS IS THE ONLY LAUGHTER THAT COMES INTO OUR HOUSE

It was a letter from a listener thanking the speaker for laughing at appropriate times when he would tell a story with a humorous ending. He was not being disrespectful or irreverent when he laughed. He just enjoyed the story with his audience. The listener’s letter read, "The teaching as helped a lot, but I have one major request: Don’t stop laughing! You can stop teaching and you can make whatever changes you wish on your broadcasts, but don’t stop laughing!" Then the letter said, "Yours is the only laughter that comes into our home".

I have giggled with you every now and then and I have always prayed with you. I do not know what is going on at your house. My giggle may be one of the few giggles that comes into your life. My prayers with you may be the only prayers that come into your house. I wish we could sit down and visit together so I could know you better. Until we get to do that, I want to keep on giggling with you every now and then and keep on praying with you often. Just in case my prayers are the only prayers that come into your house.

PEACE

Have you ever wished for, prayed for, hoped for and hurt for something and it never seem to have come? One of those things might be peace. Our world seems to go from one conflict to another, from one country’s threats to another, from one political leaders’ demands of another and from one problem to another. You might be ready to give in and give up because it seems that peace is no where to be found in or around your life.

Peace does not have to be a result of what is going on around you. Peace occurs inside you because of some things and in spite of some things. Peace can occur even if there are terrible things going on around you that you cannot control. If you find yourself today in a prison, in a marriage that is awful, in a job that is miserable or in hospital or at home with very bad health, peace can still be yours. It is an acceptance of the things we cannot control and courage to deal with things that go on around us. I wish we could sit and visit with each other today. I would love to talk with you about the peace that is possible. The God who created you, who knows you the very best, can bring peace to you. Write to me and let’s begin talking about it. Let’s start by praying about it today.

SUCCESS

Erwing Lutzer wrote, "It is better to love God and die unknown then to love the world and be a hero; ... better to have taken some risks and lost than to have done nothing and succeeded at it; ... better to have lost some battles than to have retreated from the war; ..." I do not know what struggles, wars or battles that you are facing today. People in the world would say that the one who has the most money, has the most power, is able to make the rules and lives in the biggest house has truly gained success. The truth is, success is an inside thing. It is getting back up when you have been knocked down. Success is living by your own set of values and principles and not being swayed by the actions of others, the conditions around you or what things are going on that you cannot control. You may be in a prison or a hospital bed. You may have a job that has just been terminated. Your health maybe has gotten to the point that your life may be down to a few days or weeks. You are a success, no matter what goes on around you, when you live by the principles given to us by the God of heaven. You have little control over things around you. The only thing you can control is yourself. With God’s values in your heart and being joyful because of some things and in spite of some things, you can be a success. Pray with me for a few minutes.
