Nashvillian Wesley Paine is heard regularly on the New Life Station reading from the writings of Author's Journal contributor, Karen Harlow. Karen provides insight into God's Holy Word through the experiences of daily life. Wesley's warm and friendly voice makes those experiences and Bible passages come alive. One of my favorite leisure-time activities is to sit outside in the breeze, either at a park or in the woods and sometimes at the beach by the ocean. It's usually quiet, and I can feel the wind blowing through my hair, hear it rustling the leaves on the trees, or see it moving the waves onto the beach. It's a very calm, peaceful feeling. But even though the breeze is one of my favorite things, it occurs to me that I’ve never SEEN it with my eyes. I can hear it and feel it and see it change things around me, but I’ve never actually seen the wind. You know, faith in God is like that. We have never seen God, but we can see evidence of Him everywhere. Just look around you. There are so many of His creations to marvel at. For example, when was the last time you really LOOKED at a newborn child; tiny fingers, wiggling toes, and curling eyelashes. Only a truly loving God could have created such a marvel. Pick a beautiful rose and smell the fragrance. Touch the velvety petals that wrap around each other so perfectly. Could a wonder like this be the result of pure chance? We can also see evidence of God in the way he provides us with family, friends, and community; loving each other, encouraging each other, caring for each other. The Bible book called Romans tells us "Faith is being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not see." I may not be able to see God, but I’m sure he’s there, and that firm conviction provides a calm, peaceful feeling. It is a peace available to all who believe. Think about that the next time you feel the wind on your face. Would you like to:
Are You Drowning in your Sin?
Are You Drowning in your Sin?
My daughter has a friend who works as a lifeguard. He sits
on the side of the pool or on the beach and keeps a watchful eye on all the
swimmers. If one of them gets in trouble and is in danger of drowning he dives
in and pulls the swimmer to safety. Of course, being a lifeguard can be
dangerous. A drowning person may panic and actually drown the lifeguard trying
to save his life. This reminds me of a passage from the Bible book called First
Peter, where the apostle Peter says, "For Christ died to save us from our
sins, once and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to
God." Jesus, the Christ, did not die because of anything HE had done. He
died to save you and me, because of what WE have done - the sin in OUR lives.
Jesus put his life on the cross to save us from losing eternal life because of
our sin. So if you find yourself drowning in a troubled life, don’t panic. You
have a friend on shore, watching closely, and ready to help. Want to learn more
about your own personal lifeguard? Get a copy of the Bible and find the book
called The Gospel of John. This compelling account of the Life of Jesus
Christ will introduce you to a God that risked much to save you from yourself. Would you like to: Where Did the Big
Trees Come From? I stood there
with my mouth open, just staring. I was seeing the giant sequoia and redwood
trees of California for the first time. They were bigger than anything I had
ever seen - just magnificent! For years, my husband and I dreamed of traveling
to California to see the world’s largest living things. Of everything that God
created in nature, trees are my favorite. And the giant sequoias are so big, my
mind just couldn't comprehend it. I had to see them for myself. I was especially
anxious to see the General Sherman tree, which measures 31 meters in
circumference, stands 83 meters tall, and weighs more than 6000 tons. So after
20 years of planning, we finally got to see those amazing trees! Seeing these
wonders of God's was better than anything I could have imagined. But when my
neck grew tired of looking up towards the tops of these trees, I looked down
towards the ground, and what I saw stopped me in my tracks. Lying among the
needles were the tiniest pinecones I have ever seen, not even the size of my
thumbnail. I was amazed. God made these huge, magnificent trees from such tiny
pinecones! Later as I sat enjoying the scenery, it occurred to me that God can
do the very same thing with each of our lives. Our Father in heaven can take our
tiny talents and make big things happen. In the Bible book called Matthew, Jesus
Christ is quoted saying "Even if your faith is as tiny as a mustard seed,
you can say to this mountain, ‘Get up and move over there’, and the mountain
will obey you. (Through faith) nothing will be impossible for you." Not all
of us are meant to do great deeds, but we all DO have talents. So take a chance…give
yourself to God and see what great things he can accomplish with your small gift
of faith. Would you like to: Two years ago, I watched my friend Darrell die. It was one of
the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I still get tears in my eyes
when I think about his last days. You see, before his illness, Darrell was so
full of life. He and his wife adored each other. Together they raised a
beautiful, caring daughter. And Darrell loved God so much! He especially enjoyed
singing Christian hymns. His face would flush with joy as he raised his voice in
praise to the Father. When doctors gave Darrell that dreaded diagnosis of cancer
4 years ago, it was devastating for his family and friends. But Darnel’s faith
in the Lord only grew stronger. Through all of the surgeries and tests and
treatments, he inspired us all. As his body weakened, he drew more and more
strength from the Lord. As we gathered around Darrell’s grave, we grieved for
his wife, Debbie, and their daughter, Jessica, and for all of his friends who
would never see him in this life again. But to this day I think of Darrell when
I read from the Bible book written by the Apostle Paul to his friend Timothy.
While awaiting his execution Paul wrote, "I have fought the good fight, I
have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Some day soon I will face
my own death. It won’t be easy. But like the Apostle Paul and my friend,
Darrell, I have an extra resource to help me through my final hours, my firm
conviction that a loving God awaits me on the other side of death’s door. Would you like to: My husband and I have three bird feeders outside our window. Watching the finches and wrens come to eat and play there has brought us a lot of enjoyment. But there is one problem…make that two problems….two mischievous squirrels. These cute creatures with the bushy tails climb the feeders, scare the birds away, and eat all the food! We’ve tried using feeders made only for small birds, but they figure out a way to break them open. We’ve tried moving the feeders around the yard, but they always find them. Up, over, around, under, or through, those squirrels always find a way! Maybe there’s a lesson here for all of us. You know life can be a real struggle sometimes. Worries about our health, financial woes, concerns over our children, problems at work, the list goes on and on. But in the Bible book called Romans the Apostle Paul says, 'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ. Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.' Who or what is trying to separate YOU from the love of God? Remember, up, over, around, under, or through, God will help you find a way! Set your sight on HIM, and let NOTHING stand in the way.
