Message To Man encourages KNLS listeners to turn to the Bible for timely answers to life's most difficult problems. Dr. Harold Hazelip, President Emeritus of Lipscomb University, relates the stories of those who have been touched by God's message to man. Click on a topic below to review that message.
THE
FORGOTTEN BIBLE
African evangelist Dr. David Killel (kil – LEL) tells
the story of a Christian missionary to Kenya who accidentally left his Bible
lying outside his home one night. A security guard hired to watch the house had
seen the missionary reading the book, and noticed that he'd left it in the front
yard. Each time the guard walked by on his rounds he wondered all over again
what kind of book the missionary might be reading. Finally, his curiosity got
the best of him and so he decided to have a look for himself. When the guard picked up the forgotten Bible it fell
open to the last book of the New Testament, a book called Revelation. The man
began reading at that very spot, and soon discovered that all men will
eventually be judged by God. Those who fail to accept God’s forgiveness
through His Son, Jesus Christ, will die what the Bible calls a "second
death"; eternal separation from God our heavenly Father. Dr Killel says the
guard was deeply moved by this warning from God. "If there is another life," the guard said to
himself, "and if all those who have not accepted Jesus Christ will go for
the second death, I don’t want to go to the lake of fire. If this is the
second death, I will not go." The guard wrestled with what to do for maNy days, but
eventually he asked the missionary to tell him more about this Jesus who can
keep a man from the second death. Dr. Kilel says of this man "He remains faithful to
this very day to the church of Jesus Christ. This man’s name is Jonadah (joe-NAH-duh).
He’s now very old, but he has brought so many people to the Lord Jesus
Christ." Perhaps you also have been curious about what the Bible says. pathfinder
of the sea
Matthew Fontaine Maury (MAWH-ree) was born with a
passion for the ocean. In 1825 at the age of nineteen, Maury joined the U.S.
Navy and went to sea as a junior officer. But a few short year’s later, Maury’s
naval career was cut short by a stage coach accident that left him lame. Determined to make the ocean his life’s work, Maury
won an appointment in 1842 to the forerunner of the U.S. Naval Observatory.
Bringing modern scientific methods to bear, Maury revolutionized the creation of
sea charts for wind, water and tide. He was also a driving force behind the
creation of the U.S. Naval Academy. As a tribute to his work at the Acedemy
Maury was buried on the school’s grounds in 1873. The inscription on his
tombstone includes a portion of the eighth verse of the Bible’s eighth Psalm.
The passage first came to Maury’s attention as his son read to him from the
Bible. At this point Maury interupted his son and asked him to
read that last passage again.
Hearing that verse, Maury determined that if God’s
Word said there were paths in the sea, then he would find them. In the year’s
that followed, Maury’s research led to the first extensive charts of the ocean’s
currents - the paths or rivers of the sea. His book on the subject is considered
the first text of modern oceanography. Perhaps the Bible can help you chart a new course in
life. Hello, this is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station, and I’d like to

A letter from Siberia reads, "The Bible is a deep
and multifaceted kind of book so that with every single reading of the same
phrase I understand different things. I think the Bible is the book of answers
for all our questions." A Bible student in St. Petersburg writes, "I read the Bible with delight and constantly ask myself whether I act as the Lord wants me to act. Now I have real joy in my life - to study God's Word and follow his commandments." And finally this letter from Gatchina (gash –HEE-nah),
Russia saying, "The Bible is God's revelation from the heaven to the earth
in the language of ordinary people. While reading the Gospel, I gradually begin
to realize that the Bible is a special book, the main book for me." Would you like to return to the directory of Message To Man transcripts, or would you like to go back to the list of all program transcripts?

AMAZING
BIBLICAL UNITY
Most people are aware that the Bible is a collection of
sixty-six books or letters penned by various authors. But many are surprised to
learn just how many writers were involved. More than forty authors helped create
the scriptures. Even more remarkable, the Bible was written over a
period of about fifteen centuries. The biblical writers lived in various
countries, were born of very different cultures, and spoke several languages. The biblical writings themselves are also quite
diverse. There are books of law, history, and biography. Books of poetry,
prophecy, and doctrine. There are proverbs, parables and song lyrics. One book
even includes sanitary regulations. In spite of these barriers of time, language, culture
and style - the Bible addresses a single theme with perfect clarity. That
central purpose is perhaps best summed up in the famed third chapter of John,
where it says, For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life
eternal. For God has not sent his Son into the world that he may judge the
world, but that the world may be saved through him. God our Father has clearly gone to a great deal of time
and trouble to make His Spirit breathed Word available to a lost and dying
world. How sad that millions have never taken the time to read His message of
hope and salvation. Hello, this is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station,

SCIENTIFIC
BELIEVERS
Some skeptics would have you think that everyone with a
bit of higher learning believes the Bible to be a book of fairytales. Certainly
no reputable scientist would look to the Bible for inspiration. So you might be surprised to discover that many of the
legends of science were also believers and devout students of the word. Sir Isaac Newton’s discoveries support the very
foundations of modern science. He once wrote, "I find more sure marks of authenticity in the
Bible than in any profane history whatsoever." Michael Faraday was a top-flight physicist who
discovered electromagnetic induction, introduced us to magnetic lines of force
and invented the electric generator. Faraday once said, "The Bible, with nothing added to it or taken away
from it, is the sole and sufficient guide for each individual." William Herschel was a renowned astronomer who
discovered a planet and confirmed the existence of binary stars. Herschel said, "All human discoveries seem to be made only for
the purpose of confirming the sacred scriptures." A little education or a lot, the Bible is a book that
everyone can learn from. Hello, this is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station,

SAMUEL
MORSE
Samuel Morse was the inventor of the telegraph, the
first electrical device for long distance communication. Surprisingly, Morse was
a renowned American artist, a portrait painter who experimented with
electricity and magnets as a hobby. Morse was also a devout Christian. Late in
life he wrote, "The nearer I approach the end of my pilgrimage,
the clearer is the evidence of the divine origin of the Bible, the grandeur and
sublimity of God’s remedy for fallen man are more appreciated, and the future
is illuminated with hope and joy." In the spring of 1844 Morse put on the first public
demonstration of long distance telegraphy by tapping out a message in Baltimore
that was received by wire at Washington in the very chambers of the U.S. Supreme
Court. And what first words did he send that day? "What
hath God wrought?" Morse wanted to be sure that God received all the credit
for his invention and the laws of nature that made it possible. God has an important message for you too. Hello, this

BIBLE
ARCHAEOLOGY
In 1853 British Army officer Henry Rawlinson was
traveling through a remote part of present day Iraq when he came upon a stone
spire rising more than 500 meters above the trail. Rawlinson was amazed to see human
carvings on the rock’s face. What appeared to be letters and words were etched
into the stones’ face starting one hundred meters above the ground and
extending up as high as four hundred meters. Standing on a ledge only a foot wide, Rawlinson
discovered three sets of parallel inscriptions. The first was in Persian, a
language he knew. The other two were a mystery, but he assumed the message was
the same in all three. Over the next four years, using a system of rope swings
and ladders, the British officer carefully recorded every letter on the stone. The two mystery languages proved to be Elamite and
Babylonian. Neither had ever been successfully translated before. Rawlinson’s
discovery cracked the code and allowed archeologists to decipher the writing on
thousands of ancient artifacts. The carvings were 2500 years old and recorded the
conquests of a Persian King named Darius…the same Darius who figures
prominently in the Bible book called Ezra. Just one of many Bible characters
confirmed by archeology. Why not confirm for yourself that the Bible really is
God’s inspired Word? Hello, this is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station,

GREAT
ART & THE GREAT BOOK
Russian born Galina Koval defected to the U.S. in the
late 1980’s, just as the iron curtain began to fall. For two decades prior to
leaving the Soviet Union, she worked as a guide for Intourist, the Russian
tourism agency that was actually a branch of the KGB. Galina was required to
fill out daily reports on every foreign visitor in her tour group, naming each
person as friend or foe of communism. Before she could begin this delicate
assignment, Galina had to memorize KGB approved commentary on dozens of historic
sites and the contents of the city’s fifty museums. Of course, the largest museum in St. Petersburg, and
the third largest in the world, is the Hermitage Museum, which contains millions
of pieces of art created by the West European masters. Most of the objects on display at the Hermitage are
pieces of Christian devotional art, many based on stories found in scripture.
But Galina was unaware of this spiritual connection because her atheist
education omitted that important detail. Within days of her arrival in the
States, Galina was given a Bible. As she read God’s Word for the first time,
she began to recognize stories depicted in the artwork she’d shown thousands
of times; classic works like Rembrandt’s "Return of the Prodigal
Son." Recalling her shock at realizing the true origin of
Rembrandt’s famous painting Galina said, "Nobody mentioned that this
Father was God Himself. No one mentioned that it is not an everyday story, but a
parable of Jesus Christ. I had no idea that it is taken from the Bible." How sad that millions worldwide have still not taken
time to read God’s greatest work of art, the Bible. Hello, this is Harold

GREAT
ART & THE GREAT BOOK, II
The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia contains
one of the world’s largest collections of priceless art. During the worst of
the cold war years, Galina Koval worked as a Soviet tour guide taking western
visitors to enjoy the Hermitage collection. What Galina and her fellow tour
guides didn’t know at the time, was that a single book had inspired much of
the art in the Hermitage galleries. Galina says, "To tell you the truth practically
all pictures and sculptures in the Hermitage State Museum were created on
Biblical subjects. So whatever picture you see you see something from the
Bible." Galina didn’t make that connection for herself until
after she defected to the U.S. in 1988 and began reading God’s word for the
first time. Suddenly, she had a wonderful new understanding of the inspiration
for works like Rembrandt’s famed "Return of the Prodigal Son". But there was one work in the Hermitage
collection that communist propagandists did connect with the Bible, a
rendition of Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac. Galina describes how this painting,
and the Biblical story that inspired it, was used to justify ripping Christian
families apart. She says the painting was falsely used as evidence that
Christian parents sacrifice their children in barbaric rituals and so the
children of believers had to be taken out of Christian homes for their own
protection. Placed in orphanages and raised by the state, the
children of believers were indoctrinated in communist philosophy and so often
lost all connection to their Christian roots. The iron curtain is long gone, but atheist
indoctrination still enslaves the minds of millions. Whatever has your mind
enslaved, only the Bible can truly set you free. Hello, this is Harold Hazelip

BIBLE
WORDS IN RUSSIAN SURVIVE
For seven decades Soviet atheism brought the full
weight of the communist state to bear on believers in an attempt to erase every
last vestige of faith from Russian society. Church buildings were bulldozed,
Christians were persecuted, and children were indoctrinated in communist
philosophy almost from birth. But Russian born Galina Koval says Marxist
ideology was never able to remove a thousand years of Christian devotion from
the Russian language. Galina notes, "In the Bible there are so many
expressions that we (Russians) use in our everyday life. Hundreds maybe, words
and expressions and proverbs from the Bible." For example, the Russian word for Sunday is
"resurrection" - much better than our English word, which has a pagan
origin. And the Russian form of the name "Herod" is used derisively
for a person who is acting foolishly. Even the most common Russian expressions
have a deeply spiritual meaning. Providing another example Galina says, "Our
Russian word for "thank you" is "spaceba" (spa-SEE-buh).
Spaceba is the word which consists of three words, "God save
you"." Galina didn’t realize just how much of the Russian
language was drawn from the scriptures until she defected to the United States
in 1988 and began reading God’s Word for the very first time. The Soviet Union
collapsed more than a decade ago, but millions of Galina’s fellow Russians are
still not aware of their nation’s deep spiritual roots. And communism still
holds nearly one-fourth of the world’s people hostage to atheist principles. Perhaps you also find yourself trapped in a life gone
astray. Only the Bible can set you free. Hello, this is Harold Hazelip for the
