Message To Man encourages KNLS listeners to turn to the Bible for timely answers to life's most difficult problems. Dr. Harold Hazelip, President Emeritus of Lipscomb University, relates the stories of those who have been touched by God's message to man. Click on a topic below to review that message.
STARTING
A GOOD WORK
Dr. Jim Judge has been blessed with the opportunity to
be involved in many good works all over the world. He teaches courses on AIDS
awareness that have taken him from Siberia’s frozen tundra to the teeming
cities of Indonesia. He also teaches ethics at one of America’s premiere
medical schools and so has had the chance to shape the careers of thousands of
young doctors. Its safe to say that Dr. Judge has touched countless lives. But
out of all the people he has served, one small child stands out in his mind, a
young African girl he treated for asthma while serving as a Christian mission
doctor in Kenya.
Dr. Judge describes this precious child saying,
"Sarah became my good friend and I think she thought my colleague, because
when I would arrive on the floor she would immediately come and basically hold
my hand or grab hold of my coat and she would walk with us from room to room
from bed to bed."
Dr. Judge says he’s often wondered what became of
this sweet little girl, but he doesn’t worry about her fate. You see, like
Christian people everywhere, Dr. Judge has the believer’s assurance that God
is intimately involved in all our lives. A passage of scripture from the first
chapter of the Bible book called Philippians is especially comforting. Dr. Judge says, "I guess I came to that verse
about He who started a good work in you will bring it to completion. I thought
this good work that’s happening right here with Sarah is not dependent on me.
God’s going to bring someone else into this because, I’m not her father. She
has a heavenly Father and He is watching out for her." Dr. Judge may soon get a chance to hear the rest of
Sarah’s story. His daughter is returning to Africa to work in that same
mission hospital later this year. This is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station,

LOVE
GOD WITH YOUR ALL
Branda Polk was born into a family with two great
passions; faith and physical fitness. Branda is quite an athlete in her own
right and enjoys a successful career as a personal fitness trainer. She goes out
of her way to be a good steward of the body given her by God, but Branda admits
she wasn’t always so diligent to care for her heart, mind and soul. She says
God helped her restore a proper balance as she fought a life threatening cancer. Branda recalls, "In the middle of that, the
surgery process and the treatment and all of that, God began to do a work in me
through His Word. For me to begin to truly understand what He meant about us
being whole beings. He gave me a personal example of that. God shook me at my
core and drew me very very close to Himself, for me to really understand what He
meant to love Him with your heart, soul, mind and strength." Branda notes that many people have just the opposite
problem. They take care of the mind and soul, but don’t care for their bodies,
as they should. She concludes, "Jesus himself very clearly said
love the Lord your God with everything that you are; your heart, your mind, your
soul and your strength. So there’s no way we can separate our physicalness
from our emotions - mental and spiritual. We are whole, total people. And to
focus on just one area throws the rest out of balance." A study of God’s Word helps bring balance to every aspect of life. Sadly, many people worldwide have never taken time to read the scriptures. FISK
SINGERS AND THE WORD
Fisk University, located in the
American State of Tennessee, was established in 1866 to educate the children of
former slaves. As a way to fund the operation, the school formed a student
choral group to tour the country. Known as the Jubilee Singers the Fisk
performers sang classical arrangements for mostly white audiences. Current
Jubilee Director Dr. Paul Kwamee says that, initially, the group was not well
received and often badly treated. Dr. Kwame notes, "While in
Oberlin, Ohio, they were not allowed to sing on stage. And as they sang the
classical music from the balcony, people were just talking, and these students
decided that instead of singing the classical music they should rather sing
spirituals, and as soon as they started singing spirituals, there was silence
all over the place." Singing black spirituals based solidly
in the Word of God brought the Jubilee Singers great success and so saved Fisk
University. In the years that followed the group toured all around the world.
They even performed before Queen Victoria at the British royal court. Music
historians credit the group with preserving the Negro Spiritual as a distinct
music form. Jubilee Singer Fred Steen traveled with
the group on a recent visit to Italy for the prestigious Aviano Jazz Festival. Speaking of the Italian audience Fred
recalls,"They not only heard our music, they experienced our music, they
felt our music. And, they’re thirsty for the gospel there. And we were able to
minister to people who probably had not heard spirituals ever before and they
were touched. There were wet faces, there were shouts, there was clapping." The Word of God has traveled around the world, but has
it found a place in your heart yet? This is Harold Hazelip for the New Life

MOURNING
AND THE WORD
Ed Bailey and his wife Annette were devoted to God and
served faithfully as missionaries to Italy for several years. But being a child
of God doesn’t provide immunity from adversity. Without warning Annette
developed cancer and died in less than six months. Ed likens the experience to
being adrift at sea in a storm.
Ed observes, "Storms are very scary. For someone
of great faith…for a person with deep and abiding faith, in the middle of a
storm, you’re still very, very afraid."
Ed says he survived Annette’s passing only by being
prepared in advance. Few people choose to contemplate death, but a lifetime of
devotion to God and His Word prepares Christian believers to face life’s
darkest moments.
Ed sites a passage from the Bible book called
Ecclesiastes saying "The wise man made the observation that it is better to
go to a house of mourning than it is a house of joy. And I think what he’s
referring to there is that it is good to spend time with those sober things in
life. Because whether you want to or not, those things are going to hit. And
unless you’ve confronted that before hand then its going to make it that much
more difficult to confront it and come to terms with it while you’re in the
midst of it." Millions worldwide are not prepared to face death, their own, or the passing of a loved one. Are you prepared to meet God your Creator? WORD
COMFORTS STORM VICTIMS
Steve and Patti Ellis serve as Christian missionaries
to Cambodia, one of the world’s most troubled regions. In 1997 the Ellis’
lived through some tense days when a military coup shook the nation. So 1999
found them back home in the United States for a much-needed rest. But a
springtime storm put the Ellis family to the test once again. One of the
strongest tornadoes ever recorded devastated their Oklahoma City neighborhood.
The Ellis’ rode out the twister in a neighbor’s shelter.
Steve recalls those frightening minutes saying,
"As the storm got directly over the storm cellar it sucked all the air
outside of the storm cellar and it felt like your heads were just going to
explode. And it started taking some of the plaster off from inside the storm
cellar. We thought the storm cellar was going to collapse. And then there was a
loud crash and we thought a tree or something had fallen over the storm cellar
door and then it became quiet." No one in the family was injured, but the Ellis home
was completely destroyed and all their possessions were literally blown away.
Steve says the entire family turned to the Bible for comfort. Even his children
began to quote soothing passages of scripture they’d recently learned while
attending a Christian school. Steve asserts that it would have been difficult for the
family to cope with the loss without God’s Word providing a quiet refuge in
the swirling chaos. We all face tragedies sooner or later but millions
worldwide do not have God’s Word as a resource in adversity. When trouble
comes calling, you need all the help you can find! This is Harold Hazelip for
the New Life Station, and I’d like to send you a copy of God’s message to
mankind without cost or obligation. Would you like to return to the directory of Message To Man transcripts, or would you like to go back to the list of all program transcripts?
THE
WORD AND TEENS
Nancy Alcorn served for many years as a government
social worker. She spent most of her days in juvenile detention working with
some of America’s most troubled teens. But Alcorn eventually left government
work because she wasn’t allowed to use the one tool she knew could really
change the course of young lives, the Bible. Alcorn now heads a flourishing
Christian ministry that enjoys a remarkable success rate. A young lady we’ll
call Sally is a recent graduate of the program.
Sally described her experience by saying, "I didn’t
believe people could love me because I was so mean and angry. But even though I
pushed people away, they did, they loved me and they taught me what God said
about me. Instead of believing what I just thought I was, they showed me in the
Bible who Christ said I was. Through that I grew, slowly. After two weeks, I
asked Jesus to be my Savior, and things just started changing after that. I was
able to be healed from many things from my past and just grew closer to God
until I was ready to stand on my own."
Nancy Alcorn says only God and His Word can bring
lasting change to young lives. She describes the change saying, "You just
begin to see God do this and its not out of an outward conformity to rules its
out of a heart transformation that takes place because of what Jesus has done in
their lives. He came to heal the broken hearted and set the captives free and He’s
doing just that."
God our Father is ready and willing to redeem the lives
of all His children, but many have never taken the opportunity to read
His message to mankind. This is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station, and I’d
like to send you a copy of the Bible without cost or obligation. Here’s how you can get your
free copy today. Would you like to return to the directory of Message To Man transcripts, or would you like to go back to the list of all program transcripts?
SIGHT
TO THE BLIND
Husband and wife Peter and Nancy Wonder are both health
care professionals who felt an early calling to serve God as medical
missionaries. Today they travel from port to port in the Caribbean and Central
America aboard the Christian hospital ship Caribbean Mercy. Nancy’s particular
task is to work in the optical surgery unit where her team routinely restores
sight to the blind. She recalls a recent patient named Rubia. Rubia could see
little more than blurred shapes while her husband was completely blind.
Nancy continues the couple’s story by saying,
"The week before her surgery, Rubia had been leading her husband down the
street and they had fallen into a hole. So she came. We did her surgery. The
next morning I took that patch off her eye. And she jumped up in the air and
threw her arms up and she just said, ‘Glory to God! Glory to God! I can see.
Now we won’t fall in holes anymore.’"
Only recently has nurse Nancy realized that her calling
from God was very specific, noting that it was a passage in the Bible
book called Isaiah that originally inspired her to leave the comfort of home and
family for the mission field.
She recites a portion of that verse saying, "I
will lead the blind by ways they have not known. Along unfamiliar paths I will
guide them. I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough
places smooth."
Nurse Nancy concludes, "I didn’t realize till
later that God was talking about blind people and that was what He had called me
to do. Through modern medical science, open the eyes that are blind and also to
open their spiritual eyes." The Bible is God’s message to mankind and so is fully
capable of opening your eyes to limitless possibilities. How sad that so many
have never taken time to read this marvelous book. This is Harold Hazelip for

BITTER
OR BETTER?
A family outing turned tragic for seven-year-old Gwenn
Clifford when a camping stove exploded and covered her with flaming fuel. Burned
over eighty percent of her body, doctors did not expect Gwenn to live. In the
years since, Gwenn has been under the knife so many times, she’s actually lost
count of the number of corrective surgeries performed on her body. Where does
Gwenn turn for comfort and strength in adversity? The support of fellow
Christians is important she says, along with lots of prayer and time spent in
the Word. Gwenn takes special comfort from the Apostle Paul’s acceptance of
his "thorn in the flesh". She says,
We all carry deep scars of one kind or another. That’s why it is so important to remember that God and his Word can heal even the deepest wounds. FAITH
OF OUR MOTHERS
Cynthia Williams is a veteran television journalist who anchors the evening news in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the air
Cynthia projects warmth, authority, and above all, an unshakable calm. Grace
under pressure is a skill she developed as a child living with seven siblings -
and a father who drank. She recalls her troubled childhood saying,
"You know, there was this constant confusion. The
cops would show up every now and then because daddy had a drunk on and took the
rifle and was going to shoot Uncle Henry. Nothing happened, nobody was killed,
but it was just that kind of constant roller coaster environment."
As seems to happen so often, Cynthia not only failed to
learn from her father’s mistakes, she actually followed the same wayward path.
A long string of poor choices nearly killed her, but at life’s lowest point,
Cynthia began to reconsider the faith she learned at her mother’s feet. She
concludes,
"Looking back on it now as an adult, I really
appreciate the foundation that my mother tried to build for us at that time.
Because when things did go wrong in my life as an adult, as they usually do, and
you stray from your faith, then you recognize that you’re doing wrong. You
know, the Bible says, ‘Train up a child in the way that he should go and when
he is old he will not depart from it.’ I think sometimes you depart, but then
you know where to come back to."
Do you find yourself repeating mistakes made by family
and friends? Only God and His Word can provide the strength you need to break
that cycle of tragedy and misery. Would you like to return to the directory of Message To Man transcripts, or would you like to go back to the list of all program transcripts
