Message To Man, Page Four

Message To Man encourages KNLS listeners to turn to the Bible for timely answers to life's most difficult problems.  Dr. Harold Hazelip, President Emeritus of Lipscomb University, relates the stories of those who have been touched by God's message to man.  Click on a topic below to review that message.

WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD

Like thousands of other American parents of the 1960’s, Maurice and Marie Hall watched with fear and foreboding as their son, Bill, marched off to fight in Vietnam. Bill was a helicopter pilot and went into combat almost immediately upon arriving in Southeast Asia in 1968. Three short weeks later, Maurice and Marie received word that Bill had been killed in action. Marie recalls the last moments of Bill’s young life, saying.

"After having been hit by a rocket from the enemy’s fire, the rotor was clipped off and the helicopter was going to crash. But on impact, he (Bill) could not discharge the gasoline that they were flying with, so the gasoline tank exploded and he was sitting right over the gasoline tank."

As you might imagine, the loss was devastating, but the Halls found comfort in their life-long devotion to God. Marie explains,

"We often hear the passage of scripture quoted, ‘We know that all things work together for good…’ but we often times stop right there. But the end of that verse in the Bible is, ‘…for those who love the Lord and for those who are called according to His calling.’ None of us are here forever. We’re all terminal. We’re all going to die. The main thing is to be ready to go, and we felt that Bill was ready to go."

The Halls draw additional comfort from the believer’s assurance that they will be reunited in heaven. Marie imagines what it will be like to meet her son again in heaven saying,

"He’ll come running. He never walked anywhere. He always ran. And I can just imagine him waiting for us and come running as we arrive. So I’m lookin’ forward to that. Sometimes I can hardly wait."

Do you look forward to life after death with that kind of joy and calm assurance? It is a powerful resource available to all those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station, and I’d like to send you a copy of the Bible without cost or obligation. Here’s how you can get your free copy today.

SURVIVING VIETNAM

Larry Lloyd was among the thousands of young men who learned first hand about the horrors of war in Vietnam. Larry was a forward observer for a Navy gun ship and one of his first assignments was counting the mangled bodies of the dead when his ship finished shelling an enemy position. Larry says the stress was overwhelming, and many of his shipmates turned to drugs to escape from reality. Larry had a very different response.

"I know this for a fact, without God I would’ve been on dope like everybody else. Because that was my only solace…was in God. I was one of these kids when I grew up I knew all the answers. When I got over there, for the first time in my life I had no answers. And it wasn’t that I didn’t have a resource of faith to call on. I did. But I realized that, I had to really know God instead of know a lot of scripture."

Larry says his wartime experience helped him make the Word a living, breathing presence in his life, and while he prays that he’ll never see the like again, he thanks God for the experience.

"I thought I had faith when I went over there and I didn’t. Not the kind I needed. God used that experience to give me that type of faith. Now I really, for the most part, praise God for puttin’ me through it, because I don’t know what I’dah done with my life if I hadn’t been through that."

ETERNITY WITHOUT THE WORD

Doctor David Stevens is a veteran medical missionary who has seen more than his share of suffering and tragedy. But that experience could not prepare him for what awaited him in war and drought ravaged Somalia in 1992. Dr. Stevens recalls crawling into a small hovel to treat his first patient, a year old child. He placed his stethoscope on the baby’s chest just in time to hear its dying breath. Dr. Stevens remembers,

"I’ll never forget what the mother did. She stood up, got out of the little hovel, and she put the dirty cloth that the baby was wrapped in over the baby’s face and she patted it – gently – twice. And then began to turn and walk from the hovel across the street over to the other block which was empty. And as I looked over there you could see people, all of them down on their hands and knees digging in the ground and beside each one was a bundle."

The burials across the street were performed in an eerie silence. This puzzled Doctor Stevens because African custom is to mourn openly and loudly. He asked his interpreter why the baby’s mother hadn’t wept and wailed upon the child’s death. His interpreter informed him that this was the last of her eleven children; she simply had no more tears left. That night in his hotel room, Dr. Stevens did a little crying of his own. He concludes,

"I’d gotten a little hard. I gotten a little used to it, and I needed to have my heart broken just like God’s heart was broken when he looked down and saw that kind of suffering. I needed tears running down my face as tears were running down His as He saw these adults and these children – the adults who had never heard the gospel even once going into eternity without Christ."

If you have never responded to God’s saving message, the rest assured that He mourns for you as well. This is Harold Hazelip for the New Life Station, and I’d like to send you a copy of God’s message to man without cost or obligation. Here’s how you can get your free copy today.

THE WORD ON THE INTERNET

Allison Leslie is a Christian living in the wilds of Scotland. Allison developed an early interest in the internet and built a web site that advertised service times for local churches. But Allison soon felt called of God to embrace a larger vision. She recalls,

"God planted a very different seed which was the idea of a virtual church. A place that could actually offer spiritual ministry and spiritual service through the internet. And that it would not be just to our little village in the depths of Scotland, but that it could reach to the ends of the earth."

Allison’s site is popular with Christians working in remote locations and with spiritual seekers in nations where God’s Word isn’t welcome. The workload became so heavy that Allison involved her entire village in the project. Vera Cowey has never surfed the internet and doesn’t even own a computer, but she handles prayer requests from more than seventy nations. Vera says,

"The Lord has answered so many prayers in our own lives, that we’re thrilled to be able to pray for other people. And especially we think the internet church is really wonderful and although we haven’t got a computer, we can pray. We don’t really need one do we?"

On the other side of the world Michelle stumbled into the web church while researching her Scots ancestry. She concludes,

"So I just credit God, because normally I’m suspicious, and normally I wouldn’t have emailed them and I wouldn’t have continued the correspondence. I just give God all the glory."

Of course, the web church is just one of thousands of sites on the internet making God’s word available worldwide. Still more evidence suggesting the lengths to which God will go to reach his lost children. THE BLOOD OF MY ENEMY

Africa is sometimes referred to as the Dark Continent, but Christian missionaries to Papua New Guinea say that Pacific island nation is far more deserving of the title. Even at the dawn of the 21st century, cannibalism is still practiced in the deep jungle while tribal wars can last for generations. Missionary Paula Wiemers explains how paganism keeps many natives living in fear of the dead. She says local people believe…

"If they didn’t mourn this person who was dead, the spirit of that person would come back to cause evil or calamity to happen to their family, to the individual, the village or whatever. So after a person died, the whole village and community would grieve, tremendously, as much as possible and as long as they could take it till they were just worn out and this would be days."

What a joy to free lost souls from that kind of fear. Paula vividly recalls the day she and her husband baptized a village patriarch.

"When he stood in the water with my husband he said through a translator, ‘I stood in this river forty years ago in blood, and it was the blood of my enemy. I came to the river and my enemy was here, and he didn’t provoke me, but he was my enemy and so I killed him in the river and stood in his blood.’ And he said, ‘Now, I’m standing in this river where the blood of my enemy was, and the blood of my Savior will wash away that sin."

The light of God’s Word can chase the shadows from even the darkest heart. Every Christian you meet is yet another testimony to the truth of those words. TO LIVE OR DIE IS GAIN

Raymond Sissom was in the prime of life when he began to notice deep, persistent bruises popping up all over his body. The diagnosis was quick and devastating. Somehow, Ray had contracted Hepatitis "B" and it was slowly destroying his liver. Initially, doctors told Ray that he would NOT be a candidate for organ transplant and so the condition was terminal. Ray recalls,

"From the time I learned that this was, perhaps, going to be terminal, I had the mindset that, 'Well, OK, either way I win.' If I died, I won, and if I lived, I won. I wanted to live very badly. But knowing God in a very personal way, not in a religious way, but in a spiritual way is such a comfort. It gives you a quality of life here on earth that just can't be expressed. Throughout my illness, I had joy. I had all these problems, but I had joy because I knew that I wasn't in this thing alone."

Rays words echo those of the Apostle Paul who wrote to early Christians living in the ancient city of Phillipi saying, "I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."

What happened to Ray? The creation of a new drug spared his life by allowing him to receive a donated liver. Ray says he feels better than ever and he praises God for his deliverance. HE DIED FOR ME

Hepatitis "B" was slowly destroying Raymond Sissom’s liver. Initially, doctors told Ray that he would not be a candidate for organ transplant because the disease would attack the new liver as well. The news was like getting a slow motion death sentence. Seven years later, Ray’s condition was becoming acute. He remembers,

"Right toward the end, the toxins built up so badly that I would just fall asleep without notice. That created a number of hazards, one of which was driving. When I discovered the extent of the toxicity, it was after I had a car wreck. I had gone to sleep and hit a telephone pole."

Just when it seemed death was at hand, Ray learned that a new drug had been developed that would keep his Hepatitis at bay. In the spring of 2000 Ray received a new liver. His joy was tempered by the knowledge that someone had died to give him a second chance at life. As a Christian, Ray was able to compare his experience to his relationship with Jesus Christ, noting…

"When Christ died for me, he didn't have to. This person that gave me their liver didn't want to die. It wasn't their choice, but they died anyway and I benefited from it. But the amazing thing is, as much as I enjoy the physical benefit of that, it doesn't compare to the fact that I can live forever enjoying the glory of God because his Son died."

As the Apostle Paul once wrote, "…at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly." What a powerful message of hope and healing. PEACE UNDER FIRE

Our story takes place in San Antonio, Texas in the spring of 1979. A crowd is gathering downtown for a parade. Hundreds are milling around looking for a good spot to watch. Pregnant with her second child, Paula Wiemers (WE-murs) is walking across an intersection with her family. Just as she passes a policeman directing traffic, shots ring out. Paula suddenly finds herself bleeding and lying on the pavement. She recalls that the policeman was also hurt. She remembers,

"And he was standing directly between me and the shooter. He was shot from the neck down. I was shot in the left foot because I was walking. His body perfectly silhouetted my body and protect me in those first few moments."

A suicidal gunmen had opened fire on the gathering crowd. Police estimated later than more than a thousand people were initially trapped in or near that intersection. Paula herself was penned down for ninety minutes before being rescued. Fifty-nine other people were wounded that day and three died, including the gunmen. Paula has often thought about the officer who unwittingly saved her life. She concludes,

"Just like the body of that police officer perfectly shielded me from death and death to my unborn child, the body of God’s Son perfectly shields us from the death that sin provides."

The policeman lived although seriously wounded. Paula named her newborn son "Titus", a name she’d chosen before the shooting. She would later discover that the name means, "protected".

Living in a fallen world we might all do well to recite the words of the Psalm, "Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me."

CArving shed church

Lee Wallace is a fifth generation native American totem carver. On summer days cruise ship tourists by the hundreds visit his Saxman, Alaska carving shed to watch as he creates his massive works of art. But on Sundays Lee’s guests learn about more than native art. Lee explains,

"A lot of them they’re traveling on the ship for a week at a time. One day blends into another and they don’t even know its Sunday. So I say, ‘Guess what guys! We’re going to do a little church right here.’"

Lee begins by telling visitors a centuries old native parable about an arrogant young eagle that refuses to listen to the advice of his elders. Traditionally, the story was told to warn native children against the dangers of false pride. Lee continues by saying,

"In this culture we’re taught at an early age to respect our elders or people of authority; our grandparents, or parents, or uncles, or aunts."

Lee concludes by drawing on his Christian heritage, citing passages of scripture to go along with his impromptu sermon. He cites one of his favorite passages quoting…

"First Peter five, five, ‘Young men in the same way be submissive to those who are older. Clothe yourself in humility towards one another, because God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.’"

Lee also looks to scripture to provide inspiration for his totems, some of which can stand thirty feet tall and weigh thousands of pounds. the word in war torn kosovo

Radio traffic reporter Carla Lawson spends most days shepherding drivers through congested streets and road construction. But the radio veteran recently traveled to war torn Kosovo to provide a very different kind of assistance. Carla joined a team of Christian missionaries rebuilding the small village of Sematesht (SIM-uh-tesh-tt) where all but thirteen homes were destroyed. Carla remembers,

"I think about all the hard work that everyone did, but as I look back it was completely about building relationships with these people. You know…life long relationships."

Making a mistake common to suffering people, Carla says the Kosovo Albanians tend to see God as part of the problem, not the solution. She notes,

"We have this view and I think they do over there too of God - especially in their Muslim culture – as this vengeful God, not the graceful and merciful God that He truly is."

Carla was thrilled when a young girl named Buhara (buh-HAR-uh) caught a glimpse of God’s grace. She explains,

"And I shared with her from (the Bible book) Jeremiah, (where it reads) ‘For I know the plans that I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ She was stunned by that, as I was by that scripture years ago."

Carla is keeping in touch with her new Kosovar friends and God willing plans return to the Balkans next year.
