The Western Wall is one of the two retaining walls of Herod's temple. The two walls are all that remain of the temple after the Romans destroyed it in 70 A.D. This is the Jews' holiest shrine. The Israelis opened the large plaza in front of the wall after they captured Old Jerusalem in the Six Days War in 1967.
